Hello Elm Street Families -

We are loving the sunshine at Elm Street these days! So much fun outside at recess!

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Parent Information Session on Social Media - We are excited to be offering a parent information session on helping your children make responsible and informed decisions on the internet. We have extended this invite to our TOSH family of schools from K - 9. Session begins at 6:30pm and will take place in our gymnasium at Elm Street. This session is for adults only, so please make arrangements for your children to stay home. A flyer was sent home and the info is posted on the Elm Street FB page!

Administrative Assistant Day - On Wednesday, April 24, we will celebrate Admin Assistant Day with Ms. Nicole. Ms. Nicole juggles MANY different balls at the same time every day supporting parents, staff and students with so many things! Please take a minute to shout out Ms. Nicole for her caring, kind and professional hard work each and every day.

Book Fair - Scholastic Book Fair Our second book fair will be held Monday, April 22nd to Friday, April 26th. Our OPEN HOUSE/FAMILY FUN NIGHT will be held on Tuesday evening from 2:30 to 5:30. Bring your child to a fun evening at the school. There will be door prizes, contests and lots of fun! It will also be open for the public on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30. Students in French homerooms will be able to purchase and view on Monday during the school day. Students in English homerooms will be able to purchase and view on Tuesday during the school day. It will be open during the school day, at select times, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for all students.

CHOIR – MUSIC FESTIVAL - This year, the Choir has the pleasure of participating in the East Prince Music Festival! We are so excited! We hope that all of our Choir members can make it! Here are the details:

Performance is Monday, May 6 at 10:30 AM
Location: Trinity United Church, Summerside PEI - 90 Spring St.
There is a small entrance fee to the festival if you would like to come watch - I will update you with this information when I receive it!
Dress: White top and black bottoms (or as dark as possible!).
More detailed info on the time we will be leaving and returning to school will come very soon!

CHOIR AND ROCK BAND – Showcase Performance - Mrs. Mullen is so excited to announce that we will be holding an evening Spring Showcase performance for our Choir and Rock Band at the school for friends and families! Our Rock Band and Choir have been working so hard all year preparing such fun music for you to enjoy and they are excited to share it with their families! Join us for a sweet and simple evening of music!

Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 6:00 PM
Location: Elm Street School Gymnasium
Doors will open around 5:30 PM - students will be asked to arrive between 5:30 and 5:45 with their families (they will go home after school as usual and return to school for the show).
Dress: students are asked to dress appropriately for performance but can wear the colors they desire!

It’s an ongoing year-round weekly raffle that raises funds for participating schools across the island. Each time you play, you directly support the Home and School! Hello Elm Street Families -

We hope you each enjoyed the eclipse and had a great weekend. Spring is hopefully here to stay with sunny days and warmer temperatures ahead.

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Freezie Sales - Grade 6 students will have weekly freezie sales every Thursday starting April 18th. Freezies can be purchased for $1. Money will be collected every Wednesday.

Next ordering window for Milk - Ordering window opens April 13th and closes on April 18th at 12PM (noon). Milk will be delivered from April 22nd to May 2nd.

Summer Literacy Tutoring Program - The PEI Literacy Alliance is once again offering their Ready Set Learn Tutoring Program in the Summerside area. Tutoring takes place during July and August for 8 weeks and is free for parents. Sessions will be one-on-one for 50 minutes with a focus on literacy and/or numeracy goals. Tutoring is offered to students in English and French Immersion programs. If this is something you are interested in for your child and you feel you can commit to getting your child to these sessions, please contact your teacher to submit their name. Elm Street has a limited amount of spaces so some students might be placed on a waitlist. Please submit your child’s name to their teacher no later than May 1st.

Easter Seals - For those of you new to our province and school, we wanted to share what Easter Seals means. Each year Prince Edward Island selects an island student with a physical disability to be an ambassador to go to all island schools and raise money for students with physical disabilities to go to summer camp. This year the student is Lucie Gallant. Lucie is a grade five student from Ecole Sur Mer in Summerside. Lucie is visiting our school to help raise funds for Easter Seals early May. We will be having a PJ/ Hat Day on Friday, April 26th. Students are welcome to take in a donation and we will use all funds raised to present to Lucie upon her visit to Elm.

Hello Elm Street Families -

April showers bring May flowers?! I think we’d like to skip right to the flowers and sunshine at this point! Please continue to ensure your child is dressed properly for cold and warm weather each day. Can’t put the hats and mitts away just yet!

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Staffing Changes - As communicated with the families of 3C, Ms Howard will take over the full day of teaching while Mrs McGuigan’s teaching assignment within the school undergoes a few changes for the rest of the school year! And welcome to Jennafer Lynch Bernard who will become a full time teacher at Elm Street starting Monday, April 8. Jennafer will be providing additional support to classrooms and teachers for the rest of the school year!

Year End Field Trips - We are in the midst of planning our year end field trips! Once dates and plans are finalized, teachers will communicate with families!

Presentation about the Dangers of Social Media - In March, a police representative presented to our grade 6s on the Dangers of Social Media. It was so good that we’ve invited them back to present to the grade 5s. On Tuesday of this week, our grade 5s will learn about things like: the pros and cons of the internet and social media, Apps, private accounts and personal information, Sharing Intimate images, Sextortion, Online Bullying, Hacking and Scamming, and Mental Health. We are excited to be partnering with Police to offer this to our students as it is a rapidly growing challenge schools and parents face with pre-teens.

Student Cell Phones - As indicated in our Elm Street info pack that all students receive at the start of the school year, we do not wish to “see'' student cell phones during the school day. We realize that some students may have a phone at school to help with after school parent communication, but during the school day, student cell phones should remain turned off and in student backpacks. If students need to contact home, they are always welcome to ask to use the office phone.

Kindness Matters - It is inevitable that families will have questions and concerns throughout a school year. And we are always open to try and answer your questions and work through your concerns. You are always welcome to reach out to your child’s teacher or Ms J and Mrs Doyle in the office. We can usually find a resolution to the problem when we talk about it together. We will always be kind and professional with our words, tone and actions; we will keep your concerns confidential and we ask for the same in return. Posting your concerns on social media does not ever help a situation and can often make it worse. Thank you for your support.

End of Day changes - We are receiving more and more phone calls between 2:00 and 2:30 pm about changing end of day plans for students. This 30 min is the busiest 30min of the entire school day and the last minute changes of plans can be challenging to navigate for students and staff. It can also leave your child feeling very uncertain and anxious about what is happening. We ask ALL parents to communicate any changes to the end of the school to the school PRIOR to 2:00pm.

April 8 Solar Eclipse - As you may have noticed on social media, schools will close 2 hours early tomorrow (Monday, April 8) due to the solar eclipse. For Elm Street, that means we will dismiss buses at 12:30pm and walkers at 12:35pm. If you have an alternate plan for your child for the day, please let the child and their teacher know. The Department of Education has provided each student with a pair of eclipse viewing glasses. These will be sent home on April 8. Unfortunately, we do not have any extras to provide.

Early dismissal on Monday, April 8 - Early dismissals, even a planned one, can be a confusing time. It would be very helpful if you could have a conversation with your child about what he or she is expected to do when school dismisses at 12:30 pm on Monday, April 8. With almost 400 students in our school it would help tremendously for both students and teachers to be informed of the after school plan for Monday ahead of time. If your child will be doing the same thing that they do every day, please reiterate this to your child. Some kids will see or overhear other children's plans changing and then feel like they might have an alternate plan that they don't know about, and feel very anxious until they contact a parent. If your child is not doing their regular thing after school on Monday, please notify the teacher.

Grade 6 Graduation - The grade 6 closing event will be on Tuesday, June 25 at 10am for all grade 6s. It will last about 1 hour.

Kindergarten Events - On May 9th in the early evening, we will host the Welcome to Kindergarten event for all new pre-K families. More details will be sent to those families. On Friday, May 17, we will host Kindergarten Orientation for the new pre-K students. That means, our current Kindergarten students stay home for the day. No school for KA, KB, KC and KD on Friday, May 17.

Home and School Meeting - Our next Home and School meeting is this Thursday, April 11 at 6:30pm in the school library. Hope to see you there!

Parenting From Two Homes for Kids (PP2H for Kids): PP2H for kids! is a cost-free children's program for children with separated or divorced parents. It will be presented over five 1 hour sessions during the school day. Trained facilitators from the PP2H team along with the school counselor will give information through age-related activities and discussions. Your child will have a chance to talk with other children their own age going through similar situations. The program is not counseling, but an opportunity for children to share their experiences and to hear helpful information. We will be doing 2 groups starting in May! If you would like your child to participate please email Julia Ross at juliaross@edu.pe.ca or call the school.

Happy Friday to all of you. Here’s hoping this week’s storm is our last one for this school year. Reminder to put your clocks ahead one hour Saturday evening. Spring will then hopefully be in the air to stay.

Parent Teacher - Elm Street will be rescheduling parent teacher interviews toThursday, March 14^th at the same appointment times you already book. Eg. If you were booked to meet with Ms. J at 7:00pm March 7, you are now booked to meet with Ms. J at 7:00 pm on March 14. In some cases, teachers are not available next Thursday and they will reach out to you directly to re-book a day and time that works for both of you.

Hi Elm Street Families,

Today’s (Thursday, March 7) school cancelation means that all of today’s parent teacher interviews are cancelled.

Elm Street will be rescheduling tonight’s interviews to next Thursday, March 14^th at the same appointment times you already book. Eg. If you were booked to meet with Ms. J at 7:00pm tonight, you are now booked to meet with Ms. J at 7:00pm on March 14. In some cases, teachers are not available next Thursday and they will reach out to you directly to re-book a day and time that works for both of you.

For tomorrow (Fri, March 8), we will follow the direction of the Provincial Government Delays or Closures for East Prince. Eg. If East Prince Gov’t offices are delayed opening until 10:30am, then our school will open at 10:30 am and all parent teacher interviews starting at 10:30 will go ahead. For any missed Friday interviews, teachers will be in contact with families to reschedule a day and time that works for both of you.

Hello Elm Street Families -

It’s cold, it’s warm, it’s windy, it’s a wind chill, it’s raining… wowzers, we have had weird weather this week. For the next month or so, your children need to make sure they continue to come prepared for all weather circumstances at school!

Today we have officially entered the 4th last month of school. Time has flown by this year and we head into crunch time. Planning for next year is well underway and teachers have turned the corner to the last third of the school year.

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Parent Teacher Sign Up - The sign up is open and will remain open until 8:30am on Tuesday, March 5. Go to the school website and sign up for a time slot!

Spring Volleyball - If there are any grade 6s interested in spring volleyball, you can find information on FB at: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554222834936&mibextid=opq0tG

Grade 6 Social Media Presentation - On Thursday, March 7, our grade 6 students will participate in a presentation by local police services on the Pros and Cons of the Internet and Social Media. Topics will include: The pros and cons of the internet and social media, Apps, private accounts and personal information, Sharing Intimate images, Sextortion, Online Bullying, Hacking and Scamming, and Mental Health. We are excited to be partnering with Police to offer this to our students as it is a rapidly growing challenge schools and parents face with pre-teens.

Student Attendance and family vacations - This time of year we are finding that many families are planning vacations or trips. We want to continue to remind you of the importance of consistent attendance at school, but we respect the decisions that families make. That said, when students are away on vacations or other related events, teachers do not have the means to provide school work for students to take with them for those types of absences. We would encourage students to continue reading while away but otherwise, teachers will try and help them “catch up” when they return to school from their trip. Thank you for understanding.

School Luncheon for our EAL students on Monday, March 4th ~ Tammie Caissie from IRSA (Immigrant & Refugees Services Association PEI) will be coming to Elm Street. Tammie will be providing snacks and beverages for all of our EAL students along with having lunch together. Together, they will be playing “Culture Bingo”, learning and celebrating some cultural traditions, etc… All students attending are asked to bring their lunch to the library. This will take place from 12:00 - 1:00. Students involved in this activity were sent home an invite this past Thursday.

Boys Game ~ Monday, March 4th @ Elm Street 3:40 - 4:20

Both games are against Ellerslie. We ask all players to leave at dismissal time and return 15 minutes before game time. Both teams are to go home after school and return 15 minutes prior to the start of the game. Both games are against Ellerslie.

Winter is back! We will have a fresh coating of snow to play with tomorrow! Can’t wait to see the snow creations students make!

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Parent Teacher Sign Up - In November, we had over 80% participation in Parent Teacher Interviews! The parent and school connection is so important to the success of your child. If you have a peek at the Elm Street Facebook page, you will see a video that we made with our students who have done an excellent job explaining WHY they think parents should come to parent teacher interviews. Plus, you can once again win a chance at some wonderful family oriented prizes: passes to the Dome, bowling at the CUP, passes to the Haunted Mansion, passes to Off the Wallz, passes for Holman’s Ice Cream, passes to Island Hill Farms, passes to a performance at the College of Piping! A big shout out to all those sponsors for providing those wonderful community incentives! The sign up will be open starting Tuesday, February 27 around 8:30 am and will close Tuesday, March 5 around 8:30 am. You can access the sign up from the school website. See you soon!

Happy long weekend everyone! Whether it is sledding, skating, hockey games or movies, I hope everyone finds a way to share the weekend with their loved ones!

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Basketball

Boys ~ Tuesday, Feb. 20th @ Elm Street 3:30 - 4:10

Both teams are to go home after school and return 15 minutes prior to the start of the game. Both teams are against Ecole Sur Mer.

Badminton - After school badminton club will be held this Wednesday from 2:35-3:30 for any interested grade 4-6 students.

Staff Appreciation Week - A huge thank you to our Home and School Committee and parents who treated us to many treats this past week for Staff Appreciation Week. Treat trolley, mailbox treats and drop offs from many of you were a welcoming treat and very much appreciated. Thank you.

Kindergarten Registration - If you have a child starting school next year and don’t yet have them registered, please call the school right away! It is important to have all pre-K students registered and ready to roll!

Phone numbers - We think it is important for all children, K-6, to know at least one phone number for a parent or grownup in their life. In the case of an emergency, your child will be grateful to know how to contact you. Many children don’t know an emergency phone number. Please make it a goal to teach your child your number… you never know when it will come in handy!

Milk - A credit was added to anyone’s account who ordered milk for Feb 19th. There is no school for Family Day!

Next ordering window for Milk: Ordering window opens Sat. Feb 24th and closes Thurs. Feb 29th at 12PM (Noon). Milk will be delivered: March 4th - March 15

Kindergarten Food Drive - February 21st will mark the 100th day of school. Our primary classes have been keeping track of the days of school and plan to celebrate the 100th day! This year KA, KB, KC and KD will be trying to collect 100 food items to donate to the local food bank. If you’d like to send in a non-perishable food item, we will start the collection!

ELM STREET SCHOOL CLOTHING - We will have a second round of Elm Street school clothing orders! Deadline for the 2nd order is Thursday, March 7. Grade 6 students can have the 24 with the student signatures on the back of the t-shirt, hoody, ¾ length shirt and the NEW moisture wicking long sleeve shirt. Order forms are available in the office or library.

Dental Clinic - The Dental Preventive Clinic will be operating at Elm Street Elementary beginning late February 2024.

Purpose of Dental Clinic: Screen children to assess risk of oral disease; provide oral health education, topical fluoride, scaling/polishing and sealants, according to your child's individual needs.

Screening: All children will be seen for a two-minute screening to determine their risk of oral disease. If you do not wish your child to have this dental screening, please notify the school secretary or classroom teacher.

Consent: After the screening, all children will be given a consent form which will be necessary for you to complete and return before services are provided.

Fees: There is no cost involved as the preventive services are covered by the School Oral Health Preventative Program.

Contact: If you have any questions about the program, please contact the dental staff at the school or the Dental Public Health Clinic in Summerside at (902) 888-8145.

Further Information: Please note that only preventive services will be provided and this screening is not a substitute for an annual dental examination. It is strongly recommended that parents take their children to a dentist for regular examinations and treatment. In addition, Health PEI has launched a new Provincial Dental Care Program. Also welcome to Mya Chisolm who will be doing her UPEI Practice Teaching with Mme Giselle in 2B! This week is Mr Durelle’s last week before he retires on Friday! We wish him well as he heads off to other adventures. We will welcome Julia Ross next week in the counseling role.

Valentines - As was mentioned a few weeks ago, we will be celebrating Valentine’s day at Elm Street! Teachers will send home first names of classmates in the event your child wishes to prepare valentines for the class. We will not be accepting class sets of treats or food, and instead the Home and School will provide a treat to all students that week!

Winter Wellness Week (February 12-16) - This will be a busy week at Elm Street! It is Winter Wellness week AND Staff appreciation week. The Home and School has a variety of appreciation things planned for staff and the Winterwell committee is planning for students. Each class is going bowling and the homeroom teacher will email you with specific dates/times and details. We will not have an alternate activity planned for students who don’t want to bowl. Classes have the option of other winter activities next week and all students will enjoy a fun sock hop on Friday! And if students wish, we have some fun dress up theme’s planned for the week… just dig into the back of your closet!

Elm Street Families -

We are excited to have so much snow to lead into our Winter Wellness Week at Elm Street taking place next week, February 12th - 16th. Below is a breakdown of what we have planned for our students!

The following themes are completely optional for your child to participate in - the intent is to share in school spirit and dig into our closets to see what we already have to use for each day!

Monday ~ Dress Like a Staff Member Day

Tuesday ~ Dress in Plaid and Wool Socks Day

Wednesday ~ Red, White and Pink Day for Valentine’s Day

Thursday ~ Dress Alike Day with a friend(s)

Friday ~ Cozy Clothes and/or PJ Day

Bowling ~ We are taking our students bowling at the Credit Union Place! We will be walking to and from the CUP so no buses are needed for transportation. Thanks to the Home and School who are covering the cost ($2.00/student) so no money needs to be sent in. Your child’s teacher will email what day and time your child’s class is scheduled to bowl. Alternate activities will not be provided during the class bowling time… so if your child doesn’t want to bowl, they will go with their class to the CUP to watch! The canteen or vending machines at the CUP will not be an option!

Valentine’s Day on Wednesday ~ Please do not send in any treats with your child on this day to share with their classmates. In lieu of treats being taken in from home, our Home and School are providing fruit trays to each homeroom class as a healthy treat. If your child is bringing in Valentines, please make sure they have one for every class member.

Friday Sock Hop ~ We will end the week with a scheduled sock hop dance throughout Friday morning. A sock hop is a dance held in the gym where we play music and dance. Your child’s class will have a 25 minute time slot to have some fun dancing with their friends and classmates.

Other Activities ~ Each class will have the option to participate in other activities throughout the week as well. Each teacher will plan that accordingly!

Staff Appreciation Week ~ Next week is Staff Appreciation Week! To show appreciation, our Home and School are scheduling treats to be taken in for our staff at various times throughout the week. That said, if you’d like to show your appreciation for our staff, please feel free to do that in whatever way makes sense to you!

Hello Elm Street Families -

It was a cold week last week with lots of wind and ice! When it is -20 or below, we don’t go out to play but when it is warmer than -20 we do! So, please please please ensure your children are dressed for success on the cold playground. When they are warm they have a ton of fun regardless of the temperature!

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Monday, January 22nd

Boys Basketball Game ~ @ Greenfield from 3:30 - 4:10

Girls Basketball Game ~ @ Greenfield from 4:20 - 5:00

There will be no practices this week for boys or girls. Just the game on Monday for basketball this week. Please arrive at Greenfield 15 minutes before the game, take indoor sneakers, water bottle and basketball jersey.

Badminton - After school badminton club will be held this Wednesday from 2:35-3:30 for any interested grade 4-6 students.

Gymnastics Zone Competition - The Zone gymnastics meet runs throughout the school day at Elm Street and parents are welcome to attend. Pre-Novice (grade 3 and 4) are from 9:30-11:30 and will be doing floor routines and vaults. Novice, bantam and intermediate (grades 5-9) are from 12 noon to 2pm and will also be doing floor routines and vaults. We are looking forward to this event and watching our athletes flourish!

Mr Durelle’s Retiring - As of Friday, February 16, Mr. Durelle (our school counselor) will be retiring! He has lots of new adventures planned that include some travel and time with his family in New Brunswick. Mr. Durelle is looking for an understated send-off and we will honor his wishes with some low-key pats on the back in school, but please feel free to reach out directly to him with well wishes and congratulations!

New Counsellor - Starting on Tuesday, February 20, Julia Ross will join our team as the new School Counsellor. Welcome Julia!

Ice on the playground - With winter, comes ice, cold temperatures and snow. This past week our playground had a lot of ice covered areas. As always, we do our very best to have our staff and students walk around or walk carefully on the icy surfaces. Please remind your children to continue to be careful as we navigate through these winter month conditions.

Milk - Next ordering window: Saturday Jan 27 to Thursday Feb 1 at 12:00pm (noon). Milk will be delivered from Feb 5th to Feb 16th.

Valentines Day - Valentine's Day is fast approaching which is always a day of fun in a school! We remind parents that we don’t allow class treats or food, but students are allowed to bring valentines for their classmates!

KD - Wednesday, January 30 will be the last day for Mme Brooke in KD and Thursday, February 1 will be the first day for Mme Erin in KD!

Hello Elm Street Families -

We have the first week of January under our belts and are in the thick of winter. We have had our first snow day, and the winter weather is testing our patience with the wind and cold temperatures! The good news is that students love playing in the snow and as long as they are dressed well, the cold weather doesn’t dampen our moods!

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Badminton - After school badminton club will be held this Wednesday from 2:35-3:30 for any interested grade 4-6 students.

Kindergarten Registration - If you have not yet registered your child for Kindergarten for the fall of 2024 OR you know of someone who hasn’t, please, please, please reach out to the school. These numbers provide very important information to the school and the Public Schools branch in preparing for September.

Gerry’s (Bus 520) Replacement - This past Friday, Gerry V had a wonderful send off by students he drives along with other Elm Street drivers to help acknowledge his retirement. He asked us to thank all of your children and that he truly loved seeing your kids each day. He will be missed. Teresa Twijnstra will be the driver of Gerry's route starting Monday until the role is filled permanently.

Cutlery - Neither the school or hot lunch program provide cutlery to students for their lunches. Students have come up with creative ways to eat items that need a spoon or a fork, but it would be helpful if these utensils were packed from home. Please remember to pack a fork!

Student Attendance - Arriving at school on time and being present each day is very important for students. Here are some advantages to Being on Time to School:

• Smooth transition period - students who arrive at school with time to spare have the opportunity to settle into the classroom, prepare their materials and focus their minds on the lessons to come.

• Important information – a typical school day starts with announcements and introductions to new lessons and concepts. Students who show up late may miss out on important details and be unprepared for future class events or key learning concepts.

• Develops long-term positive habits – when students show up on time to school every day, they develop the habit of being punctual with important commitments.

• Self-esteem - arriving on time every day makes children feel good about themselves.

Arriving on time for school ensures that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities that happen early in the day when they are most alert. Set your child up for success and make certain he/she arrives at school on time. And if you are struggling with this, please reach out to your child’s teacher, Mrs. Doyle or Ms. J - WE CAN HELP!

Happy New Year to you and your families. Looking forward to getting all our students back on Monday to kick off a fresh start and six months of learning and working together.

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Boys Basketball - Boys play at Elm Street at 3:30 against Athena. Boys are to go home after school and be back at school for 3:15.

Girls Basketball - Girls play at Elm Street at 4:20 against Athena. Girls are asked to arrive for the game by 4:00.

Gerry VanOurwerkerk’s Last Day before Retirement ~ Gerry is and has been one of our Elm Street bus drivers for the past eighteen years. We will have our students make cards and signs to share with him on his last day which is Friday, January 8th. He is currently driving Bus 520. We wish Gerry all the best in his retirement. We will let you know Gerry’s replacement bus driver when PSB shares with us.

Weather Related Announcements - With winter arriving, we ask you to continue to listen to radio and PSB website & Facebook for one hour delays, early dismissals or no school days. If there is an hour delay, students are to arrive at school no earlier than 9:10.

Dress for the Weather - Speaking of winter, we remind you how important it is for your children to dress for cold winter conditions. Please provide and send in mittens, hats, warm outerwear for your child so they are dressed warmly for outdoor recess, lunch and other activities that have them be outdoors. Students (and staff) go outside every day unless the weather is showing -20 degrees or colder. January and February are looking cold so please ensure students are prepared each day of the week.

Kindergarten Registration - The official kindergarten registration week was in November, HOWEVER, we will take your registrations any time! Planning for the 2024-2025 school year starts NOW and much of that relies on having accurate Kindergarten registration numbers. It determines teacher assignments, funding decisions, how many kindergarten classes we have, class lists and so much more! So… if you have not yet registered your child for kindergarten or you know someone who hasn’t, please make that a priority for January! Even if you aren’t sure yet on French vs. English, please come chat with us. Having accurate numbers is VERY important!!

Hello Elm Street Families,

As we turn into the last week of classes before the holiday break, we’d like to thank the Elm Street families and the community for their incredible generosity in supporting families this Christmas season. We have said many times that it takes a village to raise a child and this community has stepped up! We are proud of our students, our families and our community!

And this week… the Pig Kissing adventure will finally happen! Piggly Wiggly will join our assembly on Thursday afternoon and Ms J will figure out the best way to share a Christmas kiss with the pig! Should be fun (and interesting)!

Hello Elm Street Families,

It is so hard to believe that we are already nearing the end of December! In some ways, it feels like we just started school in September. The students and staff have been working hard to prepare a wonderful holiday concert for you and they are excited for everyone to see the result! December is an exciting time of year for many but a challenging and uncertain time for some as well. Please talk to your children about being kind and having empathy for those who may be less fortunate than others.

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Christmas Concert Update - Concert week is here and we are excited! Here is what you need to know about the concert:

The Elm Street concerts will be held on Tuesday, December 12 (Dec 13 is the snow date).
The K-3 concert will begin at 9:30am and the 4-6 concert will begin at 1:00pm, and each will be about 1 hour in length.
Doors will open 30 min before, so 9:00am for the K-3 concert and 12:30pm for the 4-6 concert.
Please do not wear scent products and please plan to stay for the entire concert!
If families would like siblings from other classes to attend, please let the teachers know ahead of time.
If you are taking your child home after the concert, please let the teachers know ahead of time.
Students are welcome to dress up as they wish on concert day! Feel free to add a Santa hat, reindeer ears or other festive touches – but please nothing distracting (eg. a light-up necklace).
Each student is asked to bring a battery operated candle for the traditional finale of silent night at the end of each concert.
Tickets for the “Best Seat in the House” will be on sale at the door if you missed them!
We will be collecting a Free Will Offering at the door if you wish to make a donation.

Hello Elm Street Families -

December is here and we are on the countdown to Christmas! It was wonderful seeing so many of your Friday night at the Summerside Christmas parade!

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Best Seat in the House - You can buy a ticket to win a chance at some comfy, cozy chairs during the Christmas concert! Right up front! Tickets will be sent home with all students on Monday, December 4th and are asked to be returned by Monday, December 11th. These tickets can be sold to family members or friends that are attending our Elm Street Christmas Concert. All money raised from ticket sales goes to our Christmas Families. Tickets are one for $2.00 or 3 for $5.00. K-3 tickets are pink and Grades 4-6 are yellow. We thank Furniture Gallery in advance for lending two cozy chairs for our concert day.

Christmas Concert Update - We are fast approaching Christmas Concert season and work is well underway in the music room! The Elm Street concerts will once again be divided into a K-3 concert and a 4-6 concert, and will be held on Tuesday, December 12 (Dec 13 is the snow date). PJ Day - A huge thank you for the PJ donations! We raised almost $600 to support a family at Christmas!

Hello Elm Street Families,

We hope each of you had a great weekend and are getting ready for the busy month of December. Wishing each of you a great week ahead. Below are the details of this week’s and upcoming events.

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Parent Teacher Interviews - A huge shout out to all the families who attend parent teacher interviews! It was a great turn out! It is so important for home and school to work together to support our children! We will do the prize draws Monday morning and let you know of the winners!

Fundraiser Prizes - We are pleased to announce that the pie fundraiser was an incredible success! We sold 1691 pies! I guess Ms J is kissing a pig! The top selling K-3 class and winner of the Happy Meal party is KA who sold 283 pies. The top selling 4-6 class and the winner of the pizza party is 4B who sold 134 pies. Top seller in the school is Ella Jenkins (145 pies), second place seller is Charlie Crawford (89 pies) and third place seller is Graham Morrison (64 pies). Shout out to Charlie Waugh and his parents for arranging for the pig to visit sometime later in December!

Pajama Day on Thursday - Each year our school does various initiatives to raise money for families within our community at Christmas time. This Thursday, we are inviting all staff and students to wear their PJs and bring a donation that will go towards our “Families helping Families Fundraiser”. Your child is welcome to wear their pajamas and bring a donation to their homeroom teacher on Thursday.

Best Seat in the House - A second initiative that we will be doing to help raise money for our Christmas families is selling tickets for “The Best Seat in the House” at our upcoming Christmas concerts. These tickets will be sent home to all students next week. Stay tuned for more details in next week’s email.

Attendance - As our first reporting period is over, we wanted to remind you the importance of attendance to school. We have several students that are missing a lot of instructional days. We will continue to monitor and work closely with parents and students to see if we can work together on seeing an improvement in this area. Research shows one of the reasons for student achievement is regular attendance. If you are needing support in this area to help your child, please feel free to contact Mrs. Doyle or Ms. J.

School Closures, Delays and Early Dismissals - With the change of seasons and colder weather ahead, often means poor conditions for buses to travel to and from school. For those of you who are new to our school, we ask you to check the PSB Facebook page along with listening to the radio to be certain there is school on poor weather days. Pending weather, we may have a one hour delay, an early dismissal or school canceled for the day. If these delays take place, we ask you to not send your child early to school. (Ex: One hour delay means that school begins at 9:30 and drop offs are between 9:10 - 9:30. )

Boys Basketball Game - Monday, November 27th from 3:30 -4:10 vs Athena. (Players are to leave with dismissal bell and return for 3:15).

Girls Basketball Practice - Tuesday, November 28th from 2:45 - 3:45

Kindergarten Registration - Last week was the official 2024 Kindergarten Registration Week for PEI… but we can take the registration any time! If you have a four year old that will be starting school next September, please drop in to register them for school. You must have proof of age and proof of address to show us at the office. It is VERY important to have students register early so we can plan accordingly for September 2024!

Used Book Sale - There will be a used Book Sale and Poster Sale happening this week. The books are 25 cents each or 5 for $1.00. The posters are $3.00 each. If you would like to come in with your child – you can come Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until 3:30. Students will have a chance to purchase during the school day.

Middle of November is here! Feels like we just started school in September! Please watch for report cards being sent home on Tuesday - we can’t wait to see everyone on Thursday and Friday for parent teacher interviews!

Pie Pick Up - ALL pies ordered as part of the fundraiser must be picked up by the seller on Thursday, November 23 between 2:45 and 7:30pm. Thanks to the parents who have agreed to hand out the pies outside the school.

Warm Clothes - With the change of seasons comes colder weather. We ask parents to please have warm clothes for your child each day. (Ex: Mittens, hats, coats, boots, extra pair of socks, snow pants, etc…) Our playground is amazing but is cold and windy. Students do not enjoy outdoors when they are cold so asking if you could do an outdoor wear check with your children to help them enjoy and stay warm outdoors.

Arrival time at School - It has been noticed that some of our students are arriving to our playground in the mornings earlier than they should be. We ask parents to NOT have your children arrive any time before 8:10 each school day. Staff supervision begins at 8:10 each morning.

The Cozy Cause - As the winter season approaches, a group of passionate TOSH high school students are reaching out to you for a special cause. A donation box will be placed at Elm Street and these TOSH students are kindly requesting your support in donating any old blankets and winter clothing to our organization. These items will go a long way in helping the homeless community and people in need, stay warm during the chilly months ahead. Thank you for your support!

National Child Day - On Monday, November 20, our Home and School group will help us celebrate National Child day with a free cookie and milk. Homemade cookies will be provided to all students and staff (gluten and lactose free options will be available) and chocolate milk will be available for all students (juice for those who are lactose free). Thank you to the Home and School for providing this wonderful treat and acknowledgment!

Used Book Sale -There will be a used Book Sale during Parent-Teacher Interviews in the evening of the 23rd and the morning of the 24th. There will be used books for sale for the following prices: 1 for 25 cents or 5 for $1.00. There will also be a select number of posters for sale for $3.00 a poster. Children must be 5 years old by December 31, 2024, in order to be eligible for Kindergarten.

Weather Related Announcements - As we head into winter months, it is important to pay close attention to the radio and PSB social media each morning. Schools may be canceled or delayed, or there may be other important weather related information to hear. Weather related decisions are usually made by 7:00am and are announced on local radio stations and PSB website and social media.

Youth Worker - Welcome to Rocky Schurman! He will be replacing Crystal Cairns as our Youth Worker. Crystal began her maternity leave last week and we wish her the best of luck!

Milk Ordering - Ordering for the next round of milk will begin Saturday, November 11th and remains open until Thursday, November 16th at noon. Milk will be delivered from November 20th to December 1st. If you need help, please contact Ms Nicole in the office.

Cookie Donation - Community Connections Inc. has been selected as a beneficiary of this year’s Tim Hortons Holiday Smile Cookie Campaign. 50% of proceeds will go directly to Community Connections Inc., the remaining 50% go to Tim Hortons Foundation Camps!

Silliker Glass has graciously purchased a Holiday Smile Cookie for every student and staff member at Elm Street Elementary as a delicious way of giving back this Holiday Season. At some point on Tuesday or Wednesday, 440 cookies will show up for our students and staff!!

Hello Elm Street Families -

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Boys Basketball - Boys basketball practice from 2:45 - 3:45 on Monday, November 6th.

Girls Basketball - The Girls basketball team has been selected and their next practice will take place on Tuesday, November 7th from 2:45 - 3:45.

Dress for the Weather - With the frost, snow, rain and every other weather system, it is important that students come to school prepared for anything! Please dig out the boots, snow pants, hats, mitts and gloves so that students are ready for outdoor recesses! Also, having an extra change of clothes is a great way for your child to be prepared for wet socks and muddy pants!

Forks and Spoons - The school and hot lunch program do not provide cutlery for student lunches. Please ensure your child has a fork or spoon in their lunch bag each day.

Jersey Day - Wednesday, Nov 8 is Jersey day across Canada in support of school sport! Let’s wear jersey’s to show our appreciation and support of all school sports!

Parent Teacher Interviews - Parent Teacher Interviews are coming soon! On Tuesday, Nov 14, parents will be able to sign up for a time slot with your child’s teacher. Stay tuned for more info next week!

Choir (Gr. 4-6) - Students in the choir are busy preparing for the Remembrance Day Ceremony – and they are sounding amazing! A reminder to students who are in the choir to be sure to listen to announcements in the morning for choir rehearsal days that week – it is very important that you are in attendance! Choir will rehearse Monday and Wednesday this week in preparation for the performance on Friday. Choir members are asked to wear a white top (or the closest you have!) and black or dark bottoms for the ceremony if possible.

After School Badminton Club - Starting on Wednesday, Nov 15 from 2:35-3:30, Ms. M will be starting her after school badminton club for students in grades 4-6. This is for students who want to play, practice and learn a new sport!

Home and School Fundraiser - Last call for the pie fundraiser!! Order forms and money are due tomorrow - Monday, November 6! Please send both in tomorrow and the Home and School will start to get things tallied and organized!

Kindergarten Teddy Bear Clinic - Each year, UPEI nursing students host a teddy bear clinic at school. It teaches empathy, caring and so many other wonderful skills! We are pleased to host this again this year on Wed, Nov 8!

Grade 6 visit to the Cemetery - As part of our Remembrance Day acknowledgements, our grade 6s usually visit a local cemetery and learn about the meaning of November 11. This visit will take place on Thursday, Nov 9. The grade 6 teachers will provide more information.

Milk Ordering - Ordering for the next round of milk will begin Saturday, October 28 and remains open until Thursday, November 2 at noon. Milk will be delivered from November 6th to November 10th. If you need help, please contact Ms Nicole in the office.

Public Health Screenings - On Tuesday of this week, Public Health will be at school to complete some hearing and vision screenings. Teachers can request these screenings and so can parents. If you’d like your child to have a hearing or vision screening, please let their teacher know before the end of the day Monday.

Hello Elm Street Families -

Happy last of October to each of you. I hope this weekend was a great one for you and your families. This past Friday all of our staff attended Professional Development workshops throughout the province to help us continue to receive teaching tools and resources to bring into our classrooms and schools. We are like students in the classrooms these days and love being able to get the support to allow us then to offer to our students.

We are busy this week with Halloween Fun, Book Fair, Grade 6 Needles, along with lots of learning.

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Boys Basketball - Boys basketball practice from 2:45 - 3:45 on Monday, October 30th.

Girls Basketball - The Girls basketball team has been selected and their next practice will take place on Tuesday, November 7th from 2:45 - 3:45.

Home and School Fundraiser - How are your pie sales going?? The fundraiser will continue until Monday, November 6th. Looking forward to this as there are great prizes to be won by top sellers along with top class in each K - 3 and 4 - 6. And as an added twist… Mrs. Hamill’s KB class has issued a challenge! KB heard that last year Ms J had to kiss a chicken if the school sold lots of bags of potatoes. This year, the want Ms J to kiss a pig if the school sells 700 pies! Ms J said YES!! So… if you want Ms J to kiss a pig (ewwww…. LOL), sell lots of pies!

U17 Hockey Game - The grade 4-6s will be attending a U17 Hockey game at the CUP on Thursday, Nov 1 beginning around noon. Classes will be walking over. Teachers will send home more details.

Book Fair - There will be a SPOOKTACULAR Book Fair happening this week at Elm Street School. Our FAMILY FUN NIGHT will be held on Monday from 2:30 to 6:00. For all students who come WITH a parent they will get a door prize, can enter to win the candy guess, can enter to win $25.00 worth of free books for themselves and their class and more spooktacular surprises. The brochures were sent home last week. Hope to see many of you on Monday night.

For in school purchasing the schedule will be as follows: English classes will preview and purchase on Monday. French classes will preview and purchase on Tuesday. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be for everyone to purchase. The book fair will be open after school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30. This is a great chance to get started on your Christmas shopping.

Hello Elm Street Families -

Hoping you and your family are having a great weekend and are set for our last full week of October. It is a wet and windy one. Remember that there are NO CLASSES this Friday (October 27th) as all Public Schools Branch have a Professional Learning Day on this day.

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Boys Basketball - Boys basketball practice on Monday, October 23rd from 2:45 - 3:45. The team has been selected so this practice will be for all players who are on the team roster that is located outside the office and gymnasium.

Girls Basketball - The first girls basketball tryout for Elm Street students will take place on Tuesday, October 24th from 2:45 - 3:45. Girls in grades 4 - 6 are welcome to try out. If staying after school for tryouts, we ask for arrangements to be made before school on Tuesday and have your child’s drive be at school no later than 3:45. Girls are asked to bring change of gym clothes, indoor sneakers and a water bottle.

Home and School Fundraiser - The H & S annual fundraiser will take place from Monday, October 23 - November 6th. This year’s fundraiser will be sales of an arrangement of frozen pies from The Home Place. Students will be taking home more information and a Sales Sheet for this fundraiser Monday. Looking forward to this as there are great prizes to be won by top sellers along with top class in each K - 3 and 4 - 6.

Milk Ordering - Ordering for the next round of milk will begin Saturday, October 28 and remain open until Thursday, November 2 at noon. If you need help, please contact Ms Nicole in the office.

Next month, our theme for Eagle time will be direct learning on E - Encouraging!

U17 Hockey - On November 2, all our grade 4-6 students will walk over to the CUP to attend a free hockey game as part of the U17 National Tournament. This is a unique opportunity for our students to participate in an event where other countries are involved. Teachers will send more info soo.

Fall is in the air. Hoping all of you are having a wonderful weekend and were able to have some time outdoors. A five day week ahead for our students. Message from your Home and School Presidents - Hi, we’re Brye Caissie and Amanda DesRoches, the new co-presidents of the Home and School committee for the 2023-2024 school year! We’re really excited to be able to work with the others on the Home and School committee, and with school officials like Mrs. J and Mrs. Doyle, to help make this school year amazing! We encourage any parents interested in becoming involved to attend our first meeting of the year on October 19th at 6:30. Participation in this committee is a great way to contribute to your child’s education and you can choose your level of involvement!

Fly Like an Eagle Day - On Friday, October 20, we are going to have Fly Like an Eagle day! We will have an assembly in the afternoon to introduce Eagle Time! Eagle time will happen monthly throughout the school year and will be how we incorporate specific teaching around our Eagle Values. During Eagle time, students will be with a different teacher and will have group members from all grades. This Friday’s Eagle time will be for team building and “get to know you” activities! So… we encourage all students and staff to wear their Eagle clothing on Friday, or wear Eagle colors (red and black) or somehow dress like an Elm Street Eagle!

Apple Orchard - On Friday, October 20, all our Kindergarten students will visit Arlington Apple Orchard. Participating in these rich activities is a wonderful way to support play based learning in Kindergarten. Each K teacher has provided specific information to families.

Picture Retakes - For any student who wishes to have a picture retake, these will be done on Friday, October 20 in the morning.

Interpreters for PT - For any newcomer family that requires an interpreter, information will be provided in the parent email this weekend. The family is to reach out directly to the Newcomer Agency to make the arrangements. Please see attached flyer for more information. PTI newcomers.pdf

Hello Elm Street Families -

Middle of October is right around the corner and we are still wearing shorts some days!! Cool mornings and warm afternoons are fabulous and we hope you are enjoying the sunny days!

Treats from Home…After much discussion with staff, we have decided to make a change around classes/students bringing in class treats. In past years, there were lots of occasions where parents would send treats/candy/meals into school for their child’s class - eg. Halloween, Birthdays, Christmas. This was very generous however it has caused some challenges at school and in homes. Some of the challenges include:

We have many students/staff with food allergies and sensitivities that we work hard to accommodate and be inclusive of
The volume of treats (eg. cupcakes, cookies, candy, chips) in our school on some days becomes very overwhelming for classes and often is wasted
The pressure created for parents when your child says “But Susie is bringing in cupcakes… why can’t I?”
The rising cost of food and groceries has become very challenging for all families, and we want to help minimize challenges instead of create them
We have many Newcomers in our school who have food boundaries as part of the culture

Imagine this scenario… a class of 20 students. 10 families send in class sets of cupcakes or cookies for Halloween, 2 families send class sets of candy bags, 1 family sends in a full size cake, 1 family sends in Kool Aid Jammers, 1 family buys pizza for the whole class and 5 families choose not to (for a variety of reasons). And that is all on the same day! This would result in up to 5 students wanting to call home to ask their parents to bring in a class treat, and then each student would receive 10 cupcakes/cookies, 2 candy bags, 1 piece of cake, and 1 koolaid jammer. As you can imagine, this poses challenges for many reasons!

So, moving forward, we will no longer accept class treats/candy/meals. Instead, the school is going to partner with the Home and School to provide class/school treats on a monthly basis that will be a mixture of treats and healthy options! For example… We will hold a school wide Trick or Treat on Halloween where each student will receive a Halloween treat provided by the school!

The exception to this guideline would be if a teacher is hosting an event in their class and requests food items to be brought in by families. Eg. A teacher may want to host a class potluck to go along with a Social Studies learning opportunity… in which case the teacher will reach out to parents to discuss!

Thank you for your help with this!

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Friday the 13th - This Friday is Friday the 13th! Let’s dress wacky for the day - clothes, hair… anything goes with the exception of NO SCENTS for hair products, gels and hairsprays.

Breakfast Program - So excited to have started our Breakfast Program this past week. We will continue to serve cold breakfast items Wednesday and Friday this week. We are very appreciative of all donations from families and outside agencies. If this is something you are interested in making a donation to, please email Mrs.Doyle at jmcarragher@edu.pe.ca .

Milk Program - Milk delivery starts tomorrow (Tuesday)! Ordering for the next two weeks is closed! Please contact Ms Nicole in the office if you have questions!

Summerside Fire Station Visit - Every year, 12 students are selected to attend a BBQ at the Summerside Fire Hall. This is a wonderful initiative by the Summerside Fire Department. If your child was selected, a permission form will be sent home.

School Pictures - School pictures were sent home last week. Information on how to order will be included within the package - can be done online or the order can be sent into the school. Order deadline is Friday, October 13. If your child was absent on Picture Day, Picture Retakes are taking place on Friday, October 20th.

Lost and Found - We have several items that are lost and hoping to be found. A table is set up in our entry way of clothing that belongs to our students. A video has also been posted on our school Facebook page for parents to view in hope that these items can be claimed by students this week. Please remind your child to have a look as we would love to have all items back in their hands.

Mischief on the Playground - With the beautiful weather the past several months, lots of kids/teenagers are still playing outside in the evenings! We love it when kids get to play outside! But… with the warm evenings, there has been lots of mischief on our playground at night - graffiti, small fires, etc... Please ensure your children are supervised when they are in the community to ensure they are making good choices. And… if you happen to drive by the school in the evenings and notice mischief happening, please call the Summerside City police.

Hello Elm Street families,

Your child's school pictures should have come home yesterday with the exception of those classes who had substitute teachers. Those classes will bring home pictures this week. We were able to get an extension on the ordering deadline. Lifetouch would like picture orders in by Friday, October 13th instead of the 5th. Orders can be done online or they can be sent into the school (Instructions are included in the picture package). Retakes will be done on Friday, October 20th.

Also, just a reminder that the option to order milk for this first cycle closes on Thursday, October 5th at noon (12PM). The current ordering cycle is for delivery of milk from the 10th to the 20th of October. Hello Elm Street Families -

Goodbye September and hello October! We are loving these warm fall temperatures and sunny days! Please make sure your child dresses in layers for the cool mornings, and having rain gear on hand is helpful for when there is misty weather or wet grass!

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Milk Program - As per our email last week, we are READY to get our milk program off the ground! Ordering opened on Saturday and will close at noon on Thursday. Late orders will not be accepted. Please have a peek at last week's email for details (the same info went home in kit bags last week). If you have questions or need help, please reach out to Ms Nicole in the office - she is our milk expert!

School Pictures - Homeroom teachers will be sending home your child’s school photos on Tuesday. Information on how to order will be included within the package. If your child was absent on Picture Day, Picture Retakes are taking place on Friday, October 20th.

SWBT Letter - The Student Wellbeing Team is a valuable resource in our schools and community that helps support students and families. Please see attached letter with more info.

Assembly - Last Thursday, we held our first school assembly! What a wonderful celebration of student and staff talent, and a great way to acknowledge Truth and Reconciliation week at Elm Street. We believe that Every Child Matters.

Kannon - As you are all aware, our working dog Kannon continues to come to school each day! Here are some examples of what Kannon does throughout the day:

Kannon meets some students in the morning and helps them come into the building
Kannon helps some students pack up and leave the building at the end of the day
Kannon helps to regulate some students when they are sad, mad or having an emotional moment
Kannon attends class (6B) each day and helps students complete school work
Kannon serves as a motivator for some students, and some students can earn “Kannon time”
Kannon works with a number of grade 6 leaders and has helped to develop their leadership skills and foster independence
Kannon attends assemblies and school events

We are fortunate to have Kannon and his mom (Ms Eileen) at Elm Street each day! We do not take the responsibility lightly and are grateful for your support with Kannon!

Breakfast Program - Elm Street’s Breakfast Program is offered to ALL students and will begin this week. Our program is available on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays. The menu is: Mondays (Dry cereal and Box of Raisins) Wednesday (Granola Bar, Cheese String & Fruit) Friday (Mini Muffin and Frozen Yogurt Tube). Baskets with food items are delivered to each homeroom class on Breakfast Program days and no cost is required to have any of the items. We are very fortunate and thankful for this program as it is totally funded by our provincial government along with donations by community members, parents and grants that our school applies for. Feel free to ask your child about it and what are some of their favorite items they choose to eat.

Lockdown Practice - Similar to fire drills, schools practice lockdown drills. This type of drill is when students remain in their classroom hidden from view of the windows and doors in the event of an intruder. We have been practicing these drills for 10+ years and have gotten very good at them. On Thursday, we will have our first lockdown practice.

Facebook and Webpage - If you haven’t already, please check out both our Elm Street Facebook page and website. Both contain valuable information AND we work hard to make sure we celebrate successes!

Student Attendance - If your child is going to be absent or late from school, please let their teacher know. School attendance is one of the largest predictors of student success. We understand that sometimes students are sick or have appointments, but minimizing the time a student is out of school is an important job for parents. If you are having trouble getting your child to attend, please reach out to your child’s teachers, Ms J or Mrs Doyle to chat. We can help!

Hello Elm Street Families -

We are just about ready to begin milk ordering! Whoo hoo!

As we have mentioned, our ordering system will be different this year. All orders will be taken using an online program called “Hot Lunches” (many/most schools are using this). It is similar to ordering with the lunch program - you have to set up an account, create a username and order every two weeks. To make it easy, we have set up our milk ordering to match the hot lunch program!

To get started, ordering will open on Saturday, September 30 and will close on Thursday, October 5 at noon (12:00 pm). This ordering cycle will be for milk delivery for the two week block of October 9-20 (same as the hot lunch program). Then ordering will open again from October 14-19.

We have attached instructions to this email AND we will send a copy home in kit bags this week. Please note a couple important things:

Milk orders will ONLY be taken through the online ordering system. We will no longer take milk orders directly in classrooms or through the office.
Late orders will not be accepted.
Late payments will not be accepted.
Payment using the “Hot Lunches” program is with a credit card. If you HAVE a credit card, please use that for your ordering. If you DO NOT have a credit card, please reach out to Ms Nicole in the office and she will discuss an alternate payment plan.

Hello Elm Street Families,

Beautiful weekend of weather and a wonderful forecast of sunshine for the week ahead! Fall is certainly in the air with crisp mornings and warm afternoons!

Here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Milk Program - We hope to begin the new milk ordering system at the end of this week. Milk will be ordered in a two week cycle that matches the ordering of the hot lunch program (ordering opens on a Saturday and closes on a Thursday, for delivery the following Monday). Please stay tuned for more info later this week that includes details and instructions about ordering and paying for milk.

Phone Numbers - A shout out to families who have been practicing their phone numbers with your child. A big improvement this week was noticed this week for students coming to the office and saying their numbers when calling home. Proud moments! Thank you for your efforts. Keep practicing.

Bus Evacuation - We will be doing our annual Bus Evacuation practice with all students (bussers, walkers and students that get picked up each day) this week. This practice is for students to complete an evacuation by getting off the back of the bus and seeing the emergency exit in case an event ever arises when they are traveling on the bus. We plan on completing this on Thursday (weather permitting). Would be a great idea for you to ask your child about it after practice takes place to ensure their understanding of the safety of this practice.

Breakfast Program - We are planning on starting our school Breakfast Program in October. We will be serving cold breakfast items Monday, Wednesday and Friday with the start date on Wednesday, October 4th. Our breakfast is free and available for all students. Once the menu has been confirmed, we will share in next week’s letter. If any parents would like to make any monetary donations to our program, please contact Mrs. Doyle.

Newcomers Association - The Newcomers Association is a service that newcomers to our country can access. Please check out their website! https://www.irsapei.ca/

Home and School - Save the date of Thursday, October 19 at 6:30pm for the first Home and School meeting! The executive met last week to determine some start-up items and set this date for the first meeting. All parents are welcome!

Grade 6 Leadership - Grade 6 leadership will officially kick-off this week! Students have submitted their applications and staff leaders are ready to roll. There are a number of groups that students will support including things like assemblies, playground helpers, lunch helpers, Phys Ed, music and library helpers and so many more things in our school!

Truth & Reconciliation Week - We will spend the week acknowledging Truth and Reconciliation in a variety of ways. Classes may have discussions or activities, morning announcements as well as Orange Shirt day on Thursday. We encourage everyone to wear an orange shirt on Thursday to demonstrate our belief that Every Child Matters!

Assemblies at Elm - On Thursday, we will have our first assembly of the year! Our assemblies serve as a way for students to showcase their talents, for our school to continue developing school spirit and to allow students to continue to develop their abilities to function in a large group. The focus for this assembly will be Orange Shirt day!

Hello Elm Street Families,

Milk Program - We are still working on the new ordering format for the milk program! Thanks for being patient while we work out the kinks! Kindergarten students will continue to receive free white milk for the next two weeks.

Terry Fox Run - On Friday, September 22, we will host our annual Terry Fox Run/Walk. More information coming next week!

Back door after 8:30 bell - When our bell rings at 8:30am for students to enter the building, we have staff on duty and holding the back doors open. However, if a student arrives late, the back doors will not be open. Students arriving after 8:30 am should be entering through the main door at the front of the school.

Drop Off and Arrival Time in Mornings - Supervision starts at 8:10 each morning. We ask that you if you are dropping your child off or they are walking to please not have them arrive any earlier than 8:10. Also asking when parents dropping off your child in the morning to not come on the playground or walk them to the door. This is a matter of safety for all of our children!

Scent free - We continue to ask all visitors to our school to remain fully scent free. And when we have special days like picture day or crazy hair day, it is important that hairsprays, hair gels, etc… are either not used or unscented products are used. We have a number of staff and students who are very allergic to scented products. Thank you for your cooperation.

Meet the Staff - We had an amazing turn out at our Meet the Staff this past Thursday evening. So great to see your children “showing you the ropes” at Elm Street!

Sorting Waste - We have also tried to properly sort our waste in classrooms at Elm Street, but this year we are going to make a special effort to support students in learning how to sort. Each classroom has three bins - waste, compost and paper recycling. Please help our efforts by teaching your children how to sort waste at home.

Hot lunch program - The hot lunch program was a great success last week! Here are some important tips to remember:

Forks or spoons are not provided and they must be sent from home (the school doesn’t have any either)
It is important to enter the correct homeroom when ordering so the food gets delivered correctly
Keep a hot lunch calendar at home to keep track of which days your child will receive hot lunch and which days they need a packed lunch from home
Talk to our child about whether they like the hot lunch or not - we certainly help provide food for students when families are having a difficult time, but when the child has a lunch we don’t like to see that go to waste

Library classes - Library classes have begun! Your child may sign out a book and bring that home each week! Please ensure the book is returned to school so it can be returned to the library for someone else to read!

Fire drills - The weather got the best of us last week and we weren’t able to do any of our scheduled fire drills. We will try again this week!

Practicing Parents Phone Numbers - When students come to the office to phone home if they forgot something, not feeling well, etc… We are finding that a lot don’t know their parent’s phone numbers. This could be a great home practice for them as it is something that they should know for various reasons and situations. We ask that you add this in as a homework piece over the next few nights to assist them in this.

Home and School Association - We are pleased to let you know the following folks are this year’s Home and School Executive! The executive will be meeting this week and will let you know when the first Home and School meeting will be! Looking forward to meeting new parents!

Hello Elm Street Families -

Welcome back to the 2023-2024 school year! We have successfully completed the first two days of classes and we are thrilled with how things have gone! Our new Kindergarten students have handled the change like pros and our returning students have kicked off the school year with grace and smiles!

Every week, we try to send an email to families to let you know of different activities, initiatives, events and to update you with important information.

So… here are a few reminders for the week ahead:

Milk Program - As mentioned at the end of last year, Elm Street will be moving to an online milk ordering system. We are almost ready to launch that and will keep you posted. Until we are ready to launch the new ordering system, we are not ready to start the milk program for grades 1-6 students. Thank you for your patience while we prepare the new ordering site!

Kindergarten Milk - For the month of September, all Kindergarten students in PEI will be provided with free milk! We will start that this week! Your K students will be asked if they want milk and will be provided with free milk starting Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. No ordering or payment necessary!

School Pictures - School pictures are always an exciting day at Elm Street! Wednesday, September 13 will be school pictures for all English homerooms and Thursday, September 14 will be school pictures for all French homerooms. Ordering information will be sent home and can be done online or sent into the school.

PSB Report it! Campaign - Last year, the Public Schools Branch (PSB) piloted the "Report It!" campaign in the Three Oaks Family of School. The Report It! campaign will continue in the Three Oaks Family of Schools this year and will see further expansion to other families of schools in the coming months. The "Report It!" campaign focuses on promoting the importance of reporting school related incidents such as bullying, theft and violence while reinforcing the message that students should inform their parents, guardians, teachers, school counselors, principals or other trusted adults when they need support. The campaign offers multiple reporting options, including verbal, written and online methods. The online form allows students to submit reports anonymously, offering them an additional layer of privacy and security. Elm Street Working Dog - For those new to our school, we have a working dog named Kannon that attends school with us each day. Kannon’s owner is a teacher at our school who has many dog handling certifications. Kannon is extremely friendly, loves kids and would do just about anything for a treat! Kannon attends class everyday (she is in 6B right now) and grade 6 students are trained as “dog leaders”. In addition to attending class, Kannon serves as a support for many students in many ways. She can help students enter the school when they have anxiety, she can be an earned reward for students who are working on behavior or academic goals, or she can help regulate students when they are having big feelings. Students are taught to always ask before petting Kannon and she hangs out in her crate in the main lobby in the morning to greet students as they arrive!

Helmets - We LOVE seeing students arrive at school on bikes and scooters…. But we require them to wear a helmet. Please ensure your child has their helmet on (not in their kitbag or hanging off the handlebars) when they are riding their wheels to school!

School Food - The Provincial School Food Program starts on Monday. The food orders arrive and are distributed to classes. Sometimes students don’t like the lunch and ask for a new lunch at the office. We do help out when students forget lunch or need food, but when students have a lunch provided, we do ask them to try it and eat what they have. Please talk to your children about packing lunches and snacks, and see what they like and dislike.

Meet the Staff - This Thursday, September 14, we are hosting our annual Meet the Staff BBQ from 5:00-6:00 pm! Starting at 5:00, you and your family can arrive through either set of front doors and students will be given a passport. They can work their way through the checklist on the passport (they are the tour guide!), and then drop the passport off in front of the office to be entered in a draw for some gift cards! Then, your family can get a hotdog at the back doors on your way out! This event was a huge success last year and we are excited to host it again!

Arrival in the Morning - We have playground supervision in the mornings from 8:10-8:30am. We ask that parents DO NOT enter our playground in the mornings and drop their children off at the edges. This is for safety reasons and to ensure that access to our students is limited to those with permission to have access. We have the safety of all your children in mind!

Dismissal in the Afternoon - At dismissal time, parents who are picking children up should do so at 2:35pm. You should meet your child at the door they use to exit (one of the back doors). Sometimes parents want to “beat the rush” at the end of the day and come to the office early to pick up their child. We are happy to accommodate this if your child has an appointment but if they don’t, please help us out and wait for your child at their designated door at 2:35pm. The last half hour of the day is incredibly busy trying to ensure all students get to their correct after school destination and those last minute changes can sometimes be a challenge to work through.

Change of End of Day Plans - If your child’s end of day plans need to change during the school day, please call the school. Teachers sometimes do not have time to check their email during the day and that information might be missed. Calling the school to talk to Ms Nicole is the best and easiest thing to do when plans change during the day. And calling early (before 2pm) is very helpful!

Dropping your Child Off - If your child arrives late to school, they must enter via the front doors. All our doors remain locked at all times of the day. When they enter, please sign them in and then they can go to class on their own. We ask that parents do not enter our hallways without permission from the office. We train our students to recognize staff wearing ID tags as “Safe” adults and if we have parents or others in the hallways, this can pose a safety concern.

Picking your Child Up Early - If you need to pick your child up early from school, please use the front door. Press the doorbell and let Ms. Nicole know how she can help. Please wait in the main entrance and Ms Nicole will bring the child to you.

Parents Alternate plans - Sometimes children get sick during the day or need to go home for a variety of reasons. It is very important for families to have a plan in case that happens. If you are unable to pick up your children in these special circumstances, please discuss with your family what an alternate arrangement might be so you are prepared!

Contact Teachers with Questions - When you have questions or concerns, it is always best to contact your child’s teacher first. Usually, problems can be easily solved with the teacher.

Forms and Information Coming Home - Your child’s teacher will be sending home forms on Monday for you to review, sign, make any corrections and return asap so we can update information and ensure all information is correct and received. When/if your address and phone number change during the school year, please call the office and let Ms Nicole know.

Home and School - Elm Street has an active Home and School group! Please watch for more information coming soon about meetings and important Home and School information!

Fire Drills - We will have a series of fire drill practices this week so students are prepared in case of fire. We also practice lockdowns and evacuations, as well as bus evacuations. These have become very commonplace in our school and students do excellent!

Terry Fox Run - On Friday, September 22, we will host our annual Terry Fox Run/Walk. More information coming next week!

Dear Elm Street Families –

Welcome back!! We are so excited to welcome all our Eagles back to school next week on Thursday, September 7 for the first day of school! Our grade 1-6 students will begin at 8:30 (the usual time) and our new Kindergarten students will have a slightly different plan (see below)!

One day next week, you will receive an email from your child’s teacher and some details about the first day! If you don’t receive an email, we might not have your email address, so please call the school any time after noon on Wednesday to find out your child’s teacher.

On a usual school day, we ask that parents do not come onto our playground. However, if your child is nervous about finding their way on the first day, you may walk them to their door. Students will not be permitted to enter the school before the 8:30am bell and can play on the playground until the bell. Please say your goodbyes at the door and your child can head into school on their own! All staff will be wearing their Elm Street Staff t-shirts and can help students find their way to classes! If you have any information you need to tell the teacher, please email them or write them a note! For our younger children, please ensure you communicate to the teacher what the after-school plan is going to be!

We have all the school supplies for your children, but please remember to send them with indoor shoes (velcro or slip-on if they can’t tie laces), water bottles, kit bags, lunch bags, cutlery and a snack & lunch. Not all classes have a microwave so please send lunch items that don’t need to be heated up for now.

Our new Kindergarten students have a slightly different plan for the first day of school. New Kindergarten students are NOT to go on the bus the first morning but instead, are to be dropped off at the school between 9:15-9:30am. Please bring them to the back gym doors (in the bus lane) and you will be greeted by your new teachers! We will ask parents to say their goodbyes in the gym and the students will go to their class to start their day! Please have their end of day plan written down to give to the teacher.

We will be switching to an online ordering system for milk that many other schools use. Milk sales will not start yet and we will provide more information soon. The school food program ordering is open now and the deadline is September 2 for the first two week block. Please go to their website to register for hot lunch - https://www.peischoolfood.ca/ . You create an account and then complete your ordering for a two-week period.

A few reminders:

- We are a nut free school and we are a scent free school.

- School starts at 8:30am and school dismisses at 2:30pm.

- Playground supervision in the morning is between 8:10am and 8:30am. Please don’t drop your children off before 8:10am.
